3 of the Most Common Air Conditioning Problems

Comfort that makes a splash

In a perfect world, your air conditioner would work every time it cycles on and would never have a problem. Unfortunately, your home’s AC unit will eventually experience an issue and need maintenance or repair. Consider three of the most common problems you may encounter with your home’s air conditioner.

1. LOW AIRFLOW OR WARM AIR

One of the issues many people notice is when it feels like there’s very little air coming from their vents or that air isn’t as cool as expected. Start by checking your air filter and changing it if it’s visibly dirty. Next, check to make sure that the thermostat’s fan setting is set to “Auto” so that the fan only runs when the system cycles on. If that doesn’t solve the issue, consider calling a professional.

2. INCONSISTENT HOUSEHOLD TEMPERATURES

You may find that some areas of your home are cooler than others. This can happen with dirty air filters, faulty or dirty blower motor, blocked or closed air ducts, and a frozen evaporator coil. Check your filter and that each supply vent has at least 2 inches around and above it clear. If you haven’t done so already, call to schedule AC maintenance for a deep interior cleaning and thorough system testing. If this doesn’t solve the issue, it should at least identify the problem. Plus, it will improve your system’s operating efficiency.

3. WATER LEAKING FROM YOUR INSIDE UNIT

As air moves through your system, it will draw moisture from it in the form of condensation that forms on the evaporator coils. This will drip into a pan and then drain away from your unit. If you notice water on the floor around your indoor unit, you have a problem that needs attention. It could be a clogged condensation drain causing it to spill over, but it could also be an issue of a frozen evaporator coil, causing more condensation than usual.

Start by cleaning the condensate drain by pouring a half cup of distilled vinegar down the drain access. Wait 30 minutes, then flush with water. Check your air filter to make sure that it’s clean. If these two steps don’t solve it, call to schedule a professional technician to troubleshoot the issue.
