Are Mini Splits and Ductless Systems Different?
Comfort that makes a splash
You may have heard about ductless heating and cooling systems, and you may have also heard about mini splits. If you’re wondering what the difference is between these two terms, you’re not alone. Fortunately, things might be simpler than you think. A mini-split is the same as a ductless system. In fact, they’re often called ductless mini splits.
WHAT MAKES A DUCTLESS MINI SPLIT DIFFERENT THAN OTHER HVAC SYSTEMS?
A ductless mini-split can be placed in a room or in a home that doesn’t have any existing ductwork. This feature is important because installing ductwork is a pricey endeavor, and the cost can be an insurmountable barrier for homeowners. In addition, a ductless mini split is a good option for home additions and garage conversions. Since these systems transfer heat from one area to another, a mini-split can act as a heater or an air conditioner, depending on whether heat is brought into or removed from the room.
These systems typically involve one outdoor unit and one indoor unit. The units connect through a customized network of wires and piping. As a result, a lot of flexibility is involved in placing the units. Indoor units are usually mounted on walls and are often controlled remotely.
If you have a ductless mini split, you can hook up multiple indoor units to one outdoor unit. This configuration would be called a multi split, and it allows for maximum customization.
