Is Power Washing Safe for an Air Conditioning Unit?
Comfort that makes a splash
Over time, the outdoor unit of your air conditioner can take on dirt, dust, leaves, and other debris. This debris can prevent an AC unit from working efficiently. Cleaning the outdoor unit should be a part of the maintenance routine for your air conditioner. But is power washing your AC a good idea?
WHY YOU SHOULD NOT POWER WASH YOUR AC
Power washing your AC unit is not a good idea. A power washer’s strong stream of water can cause damage. The fins of an AC unit are usually made of aluminum. They can bend when hit by an intense stream of water.
The coils of an outdoor unit can take on damage from a strong stream of water as well. Not surprisingly, replacing these parts can be expensive.
WAYS TO CLEAN YOUR AC UNIT
Fortunately, there are other ways to clean the debris off your AC unit. Be sure to turn off the power to your air conditioner before you begin.
Use a soft bristle brush to remove debris from the metal fins, or vacuum the fins using the dusting brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner.
You can use a garden hose to rinse the fins and coils of your AC unit. The stream of water from a garden hose isn’t strong enough to cause damage.
Use a broom to sweep leaves away from the base of your unit. In addition, use hedge shears to trim branches and other vegetation growing around it.
