Reasons Your AC Unit Is Leaking Water

Comfort that makes a splash

water

Nobody enjoys a leaking air conditioner. Fortunately, finding and fixing the issue is not difficult. All you need is a little time, a basic understanding of how your air conditioner works, and the ability to search the internet. The AC unit’s coils may be leaking water for a variety of reasons, so read on to learn more.

AN OVERFLOW IN THE DRAIN PAN

Overflow is the most common cause of leakage. The drain pan must be large enough to hold all the water being drained from the system so that none of it spills out onto your floor. These pans are typically one-third to one-half the size of the condenser. If yours is smaller than this, you will likely need to upgrade to a larger one.

MOISTURE IN THE AIR IS SUCKED OUT OF THE SYSTEM

Depending on where you live, the unit could be because of high humidity levels or an incorrect installation. Your evaporator coil may have a problem, but it will require either a professional inspection or the removal of the coil for testing and inspection. The air handler should drip water into your drain pan if you can hear it; if not, your drain pan is either too tiny or missing.

LOOSE DRAIN HOSE CONNECTION

Air handler and condenser connections can leak, which could be a clue to the problem. Leaks and loose connections should be checked and repaired.

SOMETHING CLOGGING YOUR FILTER INLET

The unit may need cleaning. Check whether your air conditioner drains properly. Ensure that the drain pan is fully dry. Also, check the air temperature leaving the AC unit; it should be frigid. If your air conditioner consistently blasts heat into your home, something is wrong.
